mustard stain on carpet in JOSEPHINE.What, then, is different about mustard? The difference is the coloring agent.
Many brands of mustard contain turmeric, a spice that adds flavor and gives mustard its bright yellow color.
Turmeric is a natural disperse dye that attaches to the fiber filament in a different manner than the more common acid dyes found in many vegetable dyes and synthetic dyestuffs.
Nylon carpets are treated with acid dye blockers during the manufacturing process, but there is no treatment for resistance to disperse dyes.
How can we remedy this problem?
Since the dye comes from a natural substance, it can be removed through oxidization.
This can be accomplished with one of several common oxidizers: threepercent household hydrogen peroxide applied and left to dwell for 30 minutes.
It may have limited results, but is relatively safe.
When applied correctly, formulated twopart stain removal products, which include hydrogen peroxide and ammonia, provide better, but often limited, results.
Better results can be had by activating twopart stain removal products with steam, although color loss is a risk.
A special uvb light can be used, but it must be left in place for up to six hours.
When addressing mustard stains, we recommend the following procedure: 1.
Clean the stained area using a good alkaline cleaning agent.
Vacuum well and dry the area with a clean, dry towel, pressing firmly to absorb any water from the yarns; this ensures the oxidizer will be absorbed into the stained yarns.
Mix the sodium percarbonate with an alkaline spotting agent to increase its activity.
Mix enough liquid alkaline spotter with the sodium percarbonate powder to form a paste that is wet, but that holds together in a clump on the end of your bone scraper or spotting spatula.
Apply the paste to the stained area.
One of the advantages of working with a paste is the ability to confine the treatment to the stained fibers.
Activate the paste for 30 seconds using the lowsteam setting on either a lowpressure steamer or steam iron; when using an iron, be sure to use a damp towel to protect the carpet.
Remove the steamer and rinseextract with water only, using an upholstery tool attached to a portable spotting machine, portable carpetcleaning machine, or your truckmount.
You should see a reduction in the mustard stain.
In many cases this treatment must be repeated three to five times; remember to never exceed 30 seconds of activation with the steam.
It is important to dry the spot with a towel between each treatment.
Repeat the process until the stain is gone or you begin to see faint color loss in the yarns.
If you have been careful to confine your treatment to only the stained yarns, a very slight color loss may be acceptable, although with practice and care you will stop before you reach that point.
